Mount Rinjani in Lombok is one of Indonesia’s most iconic trekking destinations, and one of the most popular routes leads to Senaru Crater Rim, also known as Plawangan Senaru. This trek is perfect for those who want to experience the beauty of Rinjani without committing to the full summit climb.
The Senaru Crater Rim offers breathtaking panoramic views of the crater lake, Segara Anak, and the majestic summit of Mount Rinjani. From this point, trekkers can also enjoy dramatic sunsets over the horizon and, on clear mornings, witness a magical sunrise with views stretching to Bali’s Mount Agung.
Starting Point: The journey begins from Senaru village (600m), a traditional Sasak village surrounded by lush rainforest.
Trek Duration: The hike usually takes 2 days / 1 night. On the first day, trekkers climb steadily through dense tropical forest, home to monkeys, birds, and towering trees.
Campsite: At around 2,641m, you’ll reach Plawangan Senaru Crater Rim, where most trekkers spend the night.
Highlights: The stunning campsite offers front-row views of Rinjani’s caldera, the crater lake, and even the summit peak in the distance.
The trek to Plawangan Senaru is considered moderate to challenging, especially for beginners, as the climb is long and steep in parts. However, it is still easier than trekking to the summit. With proper preparation and the support of local guides and porters, it is accessible to most adventure seekers.
The best months to trek are April to December, when the weather is clear, offering the best chance to enjoy sunrise and sunset views. During the rainy season (January–March), the trekking route is closed for safety reasons.
Trekking to Plawangan Senaru is a rewarding experience for anyone looking to explore Rinjani’s beauty without going all the way to the summit. The breathtaking views, peaceful campsite, and sense of achievement make it one of the most unforgettable adventures in Lombok.
