The Sembalun Savannah Trail – A Scenic Route to Mount Rinjani’s Summit

The Sembalun route is one of the most popular and scenic trekking paths leading to the summit of Mount Rinjani, located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. Known for its vast savannah landscapes, rolling green hills, and breathtaking mountain views, the Sembalun trail offers a unique combination of natural beauty and physical challenge.

Starting from the village of Sembalun, situated at around 1,100 meters above sea level, trekkers begin their journey through wide open grasslands dotted with wildflowers and surrounded by dramatic ridges. This section, often referred to as the "Sembalun Savannah," is a highlight for many hikers due to its open vistas and relatively gentle incline in the early stages.

As the trek progresses, the terrain becomes steeper and more demanding, especially after reaching the area known as "Pos 3" (Post 3). From there, climbers ascend toward the Sembalun Crater Rim (Pelawangan Sembalun), which offers panoramic views of the Rinjani crater lake (Segara Anak), the active volcano within it (Mount Barujari), and the summit towering above.

The Sembalun trail is favored not only for its scenic beauty but also because it provides a more gradual ascent compared to the Senaru route, making it ideal for summit attempts. Most treks take two to four days, depending on the itinerary, and include camping overnight either at the crater rim or by the lake.

For anyone seeking a memorable adventure in Indonesia’s wild highlands, the Sembalun Savannah route to Mount Rinjani offers an unforgettable experience filled with nature, challenge, and reward.
