A Short but Rewarding Adventure in Mount Rinjani National Park
For those who dream of experiencing the stunning beauty of Mount Rinjani but have limited time or prefer a less strenuous hike, the Second Summit trek via Senaru offers a perfect alternative. This 2-day, 1-night journey takes adventurers through lush tropical forests, up to the Senaru Crater Rim, and onward to the Second Summit (Mount Sangkareang) at 3,126 meters above sea level.
The trek begins in Senaru Village, located on the northern slope of Mount Rinjani. This traditional Sasak village is not only the starting point for the climb but also a gateway to some of Lombok’s most famous waterfalls, such as Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. Many trekkers choose to arrive a day early to explore these natural wonders and acclimatize before the ascent.
On the first day of the trek, hikers begin their journey through dense rainforest filled with tropical birds, monkeys, and towering trees. The climb is steady and challenging, with several rest points along the way. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of hiking, trekkers reach the Senaru Crater Rim (2,641m), where they will set up camp for the night. From here, the view is breathtaking—overlooking the turquoise-colored Segara Anak Lake, the Barujari volcano rising from the center of the caldera, and the towering main summit of Rinjani in the distance. Sunset from the rim is a moment to remember.
Before dawn on the second day, the trek continues upward to the Second Summit, also known as Mount Sangkareang. The early morning climb takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise view from the peak. From here, trekkers can admire a 360-degree panorama, including views of Bali, Sumbawa, and the sweeping landscapes of Lombok. Though not as high as the main summit, the Second Summit provides a similarly majestic and far less crowded experience.
After enjoying the sunrise and taking in the scenery, hikers return to the crater rim for a warm breakfast before descending back through the forest to Senaru. The descent usually takes around 4 to 5 hours. By early afternoon, the trek concludes, making this an ideal adventure for those with limited time who still want to experience the wild beauty of Mount Rinjani.
The Senaru–Second Summit trek is suitable for beginner to intermediate hikers who are physically fit and ready for a moderate challenge. It offers all the highlights of a Rinjani trek—stunning views, unique volcanic landscapes, and cultural richness—without the demanding multi-day ascent to the 3,726-meter main peak.
For travelers looking for a rewarding mountain adventure in a short time frame, Mount Sangkareang via Senaru is a truly memorable experience.
